Welcome to New York!
New York City – the so-called Big Apple
and America’s largest city – reigns as capital of the world, with the finest, most diverse selection of
entertainment, museums and restaurants imaginable. Destruction of the World Trade Center has altered New York
City’s skyline, but not its indestructible spirit, and visitors from everywhere still flock to the “city that
never sleeps" and its icons, from the Empire State
Building to the Statue of Liberty. New York City has
hundreds of accommodations to fit any budget and taste, from favorite chain hotels to stylish boutique
properties. From the best, original delis to five-star dining, New York City also has a restaurant for every
palate and pocketbook. Why is NYC called the Big Apple? In the 1920s, John Fitzgerald, a sportswriter for
the Morning Telegraph overheard stable hands in New Orleans refer to NYC's racetracks as "the Big Apple"
so he named his column "Around the Big Apple." A decade later, jazz musicians adopted the term to refer to
New York City, and especially Harlem, as the world’s jazz capital. As lore goes, there are many apples on the
tree of success, but when you pick New York City, you pick the Big Apple. Enjoy your stay in New York City!
